All the electrical must be turned on, all the PCs booted up (with a different code for each!) The drop off boxes must be emptied and the books and DVDs have to scanned back in via computer, separated, those with holds on them marked and set aside. We get other branches book dropped at ours, so those have to be checked in, sorted and placed in the appropriate bin to go back to their home branch. While doing this, you must also assess any damage, note, and set aside. Once that is accomplished the Dewey Decimal System comes into play. Everything has to be put in order alphabetically and numerically, placed on carts and wheeled through the aisles to be placed back on the shelves by yours truly. Time involved to get one full cart ready to shelve? Approximately 2-2 1/2 hours depending on the number of books checked in.
I'm only there part time right now and yesterday was the first day I got my entire cart put away before time to go home. It's only been 3 days--I'm still learning my way around.
When I get this down, they teach me the desk. How to issue cards, take fines, help the patrons find what they need either on our shelves or at another branch, via the reservation system. Lots to learn.
My body is getting a workout, reach, stoop, bend, twist, repeat.
And you thought it was a cushy job...HA!
